Storm Water BMPs Open Doors to Other Sustainability Opportunities

The insurgence of sustainable design has shown that there are synergies between storm water management and other green building practices. A well-designed bio-retention cell collects and stores storm water while filtering pollutants, and looks like a landscape feature. The key to success for using best management practices lies in the soil, which acts as the filtration medium.

Central Ohio to Host International Summit on Ecological Sustainability

Central Ohio will host as many as 2,000 of the world’s most recognized ecologists as EcoSummit 2012 comes to Columbus September 30-October 5, 2012. . The theme of this international summit is “Ecological Sustainability: Restoring the Planet’s Ecosystem Services.”

EcoSummit 2012, is being led by William Mitsch, an internationally recognized wetlands ecologist, distinguished professor and director of Ohio State’s Olentangy River Wetland Research Park. The City of Columbus, the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission and OSU are hosts of the summit.

This will be the fourth EcoSummit and it will place Central Ohio on a worldwide stage with cities such as Copenhagen, Halifax Nova Scotia and Beijing – the summits’ previous host cities.

It is the Capital Area Humane Society’s vision that all animals live free of suffering and all companion animals are valued members of loving and caring families. We fight animal cruelty, help animals in need and advocate for their well-being.
The Capital Area Humane Society helps more than 10,000 animals each year. We bring valuable services to people and animals in our community, including animal cruelty investigations, animal adoptions and admissions, education and outreach, access to spay/neuter services and more.

New Compostable Mesh Leaf Bags

Brown paper yard waste bags are a staple of the fall in Ohio.

First, one has to wonder, "why do we even use brown paper bags?" Because they're biodegradable!

Local municipalities often re-direct organic waste to be recycled or reused and that's exactly what Kurtz Bros. specializes in!

However, there is a dirty little secret about brown paper yard waste bags -- they hide contaminants.

Contaminants can be anything from plastic, to trash, to treated wood (that's a big no, no!) and all these bad agents make it difficult for Kurtz Bros. to recycle the material as it adds an extra layer of workdue to the need to spot the contaminant material and then remove it.

Luckily there is a solution for both the recycler and the home owner who wants a simple and effective manner to remove yard waste -- dsolv™ bags.

"The dsolv™ system allows homeowners to more quickly and easily fill each of the bags with up to 60 pounds of yard waste. Homeowners simply make a knot on the top of the mesh bag and then use a fist-sized ergonomic carrying handle to transport the bag curbside for pickup. For haulers and compost facilities, the dsolv™ bag is easily recognizable and clearly marked as compostable. Unlike paper yard waste bags, it will not tear if it becomes wet and is easier to load into the garbage truck. Finally, the mesh bag construction enables easier identification of unwanted contaminants."

Plus they are biodegradable:

"The new dsolv™ bags are made from a bio-resin. Corn and other plants are processed to form a starch compound that is used to create the bags. The resin is 100 percent compostable, yet the bag offers strength and a long shelf life. The new bags do not degrade when exposed to rain, oxygen and sunlight. Only when they are placed in a composting environment, do the bags begin to biodegrade. Under ideal composting conditions, the bag breaks down in about six months."

One Kurtz Bros. employee estimates that using dsolvbags can reduce the amount of contaminants up to 50%. That's a win win for both the recyclers and the home owner.

Landscapers Earn Reprieve on Enforcement of New Safety Regulations

Many landscapers were worried about the new rules that the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) was set to put enforce on vehicles with the weight between 10,001 and 26,000 pounds but there is good news. PUCO will delay active enforcement of the law until 2012.

Sandy Munley, the Executive Director Ohio Landscape Association, Inc., sent out this email to thank members who made their concerns heard to PUCO:

"Congratulations! Your voice was heard! Thank you to all of you that contacted your state legislators and the PUCO! Thank you to all that came to the PUCO Compliance Seminars armed with many questions for the PUCO staff! You clearly demonstrated that it was not possible to comply with the New Safety Regulations for Commercial Vehicles between 10,001 and 26,000 pounds in such short notice.
As a result, the PUCO has delayed the active enforcement of this rule until January 1, 2012. This will not only give you time to comply, but it will give us valuable time to work with the PUCO and our state legislature to review these rules and work together to revise them. The PUCO will establish a process that will allow for further comments and has created an email listserve where you can subscribe to updates on this issue at www.PUCO.ohio.gov/PUCO/docketing.

I attended the PUCO meeting today to hear first hand the information regarding this delay and I have attached their official Press Release that was handed out after the meeting. Please note, these regulations are currently in affect, the only thing that has been delayed is the civil forfeiture (fines), however, if you are found in gross violation, you will still be fined.
Our committee chair, Mary Wheeler has been in contact with Senator Grendell and he has pledged his assistance with this issue. I have spoken with Rep. Cheryl Grossman, who has taken the lead on this issue and pledged our assistance to her.
Again, thank you all for speaking up. You are proof positive that although our political system can be frustrating at times, it can work successfully when you get involved and we work together for a positive outcome. I will be back in touch as we learn more."

Today we feature Joan's Fund, a non-profit that supports medical research into curing oral cancer at Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The Joan Bisesi Fund for Head and Neck Oncology Research

Joan Bisesi, a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend, died in November 2001 from a rare form of oral cancer, one which was particularly unusual for a woman of her youth, vitality and healthy lifestyle.

In her last months, she joined with her husband, Phil, to search for a way in which her battle with the disease could be used for the good of others for years to come.

And so, with the support of many, they founded Joan’s Fund, an endowment at The Ohio State University, through the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove
Research Institute. Numerous cancer survivors, caregivers, and supporters have worked diligently to help Joan’s Fund with its mission of increasing awareness about head and neck cancers and raising money for head and neck cancer research.

We are actively awarding grants to researchers to help support them in their work to ease the lives of head and neck cancer patients and find a cure for this devastating disease. Your support of our fund will help us continue with our mission and provide much needed hope to head and neck cancer patients and their loved ones.

Kurtz Bros. Technology Partner Helps Recycle Ohio State Food for Green Energy

Most of us don't have very fond memories of college cafeteria food.

While times have certainly changed as universities realized that food can actually attract students you have to wonder what happens to all that uneaten food?

It used to become trash but thanks to Kurtz Bros. affiliate Quasar Energy Group food waste from The Ohio State University is now recycled to make electricity:

"Don’t feel bad if you can’t finish your sandwich at the Ohio Union. It’s headed for brighter things — like powering someone’s home. Thanks to the addition of a food pulper, which turns organic waste into a byproduct with multiple uses, the union doesn’t need garbage disposals, reducing its waste output and water usage.

The innovations at the union are just the start of greener days to come at Ohio State. Plans are underway to divert all the university’s organic waste to a Columbus biogas facility like the one operated in Wooster by Quasar Energy Group at the new BioHio Research park. Set to begin operations in September, the Columbus plant will ultimately process 25,000 tons of waste per year and will generate enough power to run 1,000 homes and businesses."

Strickland, Quasar Break Ground on Renewable Energy System to Create Jobs
in Columbus

Columbus, OH--Ohio Governor Ted Strickland and Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman joined officials from quasar energy group, The Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) and Kurtz Bros., Inc. to celebrate the groundbreaking of quasar's fourth Ohio biomass waste-to-energy system in Columbus. The project is expected to create and retain 72 direct and indirect jobs.
The energy system will process the City of Columbus' biosolids, regional food waste, and FOG (fats, oil and grease) to generate 1MWh of electricity each hour that will power businesses and homes in Columbus.
"I believe in Ohio because the future of energy is happening right now, and it's happening right here," Strickland said. "We are proud to have partnered with quasar through the Ohio Third Frontier Program, which is helping to make Ohio the home of alternative energy while creating new Ohio jobs that can't be outsourced."
This collaborative initiative is another example of Ohio's commitment to growing an advanced energy industry. Strickland announced a $3.06 million loan through the Ohio Bipartisan Job Stimulus for Advanced Energy in support of this project in December, 2009. Also in December, the Ohio Third Frontier Advanced Energy Program announced an investment of $2 million in quasar for its Accelerating Commercialization of Anaerobic Digestion for Bioenergy project.
"This new bio-fuels plant will divert biodegradable wastes and convert it to green electricity," said Mayor Michael B. Coleman. "This project also is the latest in our efforts to clean up and, with our partners, redevelop brownfield areas."
SWACO Executive Director Ron Mills stated that "Projects such as today's will return Ohio to its rightful place and traditional role of innovation and technological advancement."
"Today is an exciting day for Ohio," stated quasar President Mel Kurtz. "Today we are celebrating the result of collaborating to not only build a biogas facility, but to grow an industry."

I would like to thank our Columbus, OH team members for sending me over this photo the of our booth at the Central Environmental Trade Show.

"The CENTS show was a great success this year. Even though it was smaller than in years past we had really good traffic by our booth and made a lot of contact with current and prospective customers. The main items we were talking to them about is our incentive program, our landscape supply facility in Alexandria and our Nursery.

Customers can possibly earn a 10% rebate based on their 2010 sales with our new incentive program. There are 2 different programs so customers should contact their salesperson for more details. If they are not sure who their salesperson is they can contact me at 614-873-2000 x28. We also put together a product and services guide that details all the different areas of the company. Customers who wish to receive one of these can call me or email at jeffs@kurtzcoh.com.

We announced that our Brookside Sand and Gravel operation in Alexandria will be selling our landscape products this spring. The facility is located at 2409 Johnstown-Alexandria Rd, just on the north end of town. So in addition to the aggregates they will also produce and sell mulches, soils and composts.

We also just brought on board Colin Cross who will be the salesman for our Nursery. Colin has 15+ years in the nursery field and will complement the Nursery Manager, Bill Herzog, who has over 25 years of nursery experience. These roof tops are an eco-option to the standard flat roof tops that are the defining of most school, office, and hospital buildings. The idea has grown rapidly as a way to help prevent some of the typical problems associated with flat roof tops. Flat roof tops traditionally allow pooling or flooding excess water cause. Large amount of snow can easily collect and sit for months and when it melts, large amounts of water can result. Significant amounts of runoff contribute to erosion of the soil. Also, such "industrial" roof tops act as a magnet for the sun causing potentially thousands of dollars in damage.

There are ways to help make such roof tops more environmentally friendly without completely rebuilding!

Benefits of vegetated rooftops:

They provide a degree of insulation that reduces both heating and cooling costs.
Vegetation acts as a natural sound barrier, reducing noise pollution in the city environment.
Plants reduce the carbon dioxide and dust from the air, and provides a greater quality of oxygen.
Plants reduce the amount of runoff or potential flooding that can occur with different roof styles.

Another option when considering runoff erosion is to include the formation of a rain garden in your landscape layout.

What is a rain garden?

A rain garden is a designated plot of land designed to allow water runoff from roofs, driveways, and paved areas to collect and be absorbed into the ground. This prevents erosion and flooding of the land. It also prevents harmful chemicals, pesticides, and bacteria from collecting in our storm drains and lakes and streams. As the water collects in the depressed land, it will filter through the soil before entering the natural water table. Holiday Fire Safety Tips

There are an estimated 200 fires and 25 injuries resulting from Christmas tree fires each year in the United States. There are also a countless number of other injuries related to holiday celebrations and the only way to prevent injuries is to become knowledgeable about the danger.

Kurtz Bros., Inc does accept Christmas Tree drop-offs after the holiday season at our Bridgeview production location. Trees must be free of decorations including tinsel. Please recycle your trees!

Having a working smoke alarm reduces one's chance of dying in a fire by nearly a half.

Never use an extension cord for a cooking appliance, as it can overload the circuit and cause a fire.

Never put a frozen turkey in the deep dryer.

Do not place your tree close to a heat source, including a fireplace or heat vent. The heat will dry out the tree and cause it to be more easily ignited by heat, flame or sparks.

Never put Christmas tree branches or needles in a fireplace or wood burning stove.

When the tree becomes dry, discard it promptly. The best way to dispose of your tree is to take it to a recycling center or have it collected by a community pick-up service.

Inspect holiday lights each year for frayed wire, bare spots, gaps in the insulation, broken or cracked sockets, and excessive kinking or wear.

Use only lighting evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).

Do not overload outlets. Connect strings of lights to an extension cord before plugging the cord into the outlet.

Do not leave lit holiday lights unattended.

Avoid using lit candles. If you do use them, make sure they are in stable holders and place them where they can not be easily knocked over.

Never leave the house with candles burning.

Winter is upon us here in NE Ohio and the weather will soon leave us with snow. Yikes. Kurtz Bros., Inc has products perfect for combating the snow this winter.

Available in the Cleveland Area

Rock Salt

Rock Salt is mined Sodium Chloride that has been crushed and screened to comply with ASTM specifications for deicing salt. Particles are irregular, white to gray in color. Rock Salt can be used for control of snow and ice on paved and other solid surfaces. Rock Salt is not suitable for application on turf or around trees and shrubs. Rock Salt should not be applied to concrete aged less than two years. Works until 20 degrees Fahrenheit .

Melt-a-Way

INCREASED PERFORMANCE
Each sodium chloride granule has been sprayed with Liquid MAGMELT. The magnesium chloride-based MAGMELT provides a supercharge to each of the salt particles, providing an icemelt that begins working over twice as fast as straight salt and conventional deicers. MELT-a-WAY works from freezing temperatures to zero degrees.

COST EFFECTIVE
To provide you an economical solution for your task, we have created a snow and ice melt that is sodium chloride based with potassium chloride.

REDUCED CORROSION
Mixed in with Liquid MAGMELT - is a patented corrosion inhibitor to reduce the negative impact of salt on metal surfaces.

Calcium Chloride

PELADOW* (calcium chloride pellets) is a well known ice melt product capable of melting at -25°F below zero. For safer sidewalks and steps you can't beat PELADOW Premier Snow and Ice Melter. In order for any deicer to work, it must become a solution. The solution (brine) provides the deicing action, not the solid material. PELADOW works fast because it attracts moisture from its surroundings, and quickly turns into a solution. Other commonly used deicers can't do this. They need direct contact with a moisture source which, of course, isn't readily available at freezing temperatures. In addition, PELADOW is the only commonly used deicer which is exothermic in its melting action. PELADOW gives off heat while dissolving, which speeds the melting process. And PELADOW keeps working even when temperatures go as low as -25°F. So when comparing the speed of other deicers to PELADOW, there's really no contest.

Effectively melts down to -25° F
Begins melting immediately upon impact — generates melting heat fast.
Quickly penetrates through frozen surfaces to undercut the ice.
Most efficient de-icer on the market — melts more so application rate is less.
Long-lasting melting action — requires fewer applications than other deicers.
No powdery residue — odorless and colorless.
Safe on concrete and vegetation when used correctly.

A Volunteer Project

On October 7th, 2009 The Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association along with a group of fantastic sponsors banded together to recreate the year of a local family. The Ogbuji family lost their three young daughters and home to a fire in December 2007.

Thanks to countless time, money, and effort donated from the community, the Ogbuji family again had a beautiful home. They welcome the birth of their new baby girl and the work that needed to be done in the yard was put on hold.

The ONLA agreed to take on the project along with the donations of several local companies. Kurtz Bros., Inc was also eager the help out a family in need, and donated both topsoil and lime screen to aid in the transformation of the lawn.

The project took nearly 12 hours to complete. The Ogbujis served coffee and donuts ans hot dogs and chips to the volunteers that spent their day working on their yard.

Kurtz Bros., Inc in conjunction with the Ohio Contractors Association is proud to take part in a holiday food drive to benefit the Cleveland Foodbank.

We will be collecting non-perishable and canned food items as well as hygiene products at our main office in Independence from now until December 10th, 2009.

The Cleveland Foodbank was founded in 1979 as a non-profit way of battling the ever growing problem of hunger in the United States, and more specifically in our city of Cleveland. So far in 2009, the Foodbank has distributed over 27 million pounds of food, which is enough to provide more than 18 million meals for the needy in Greater Cleveland!

As the holiday season quickly approaches it becomes even more important to help those in need receive a hot meal at the end of each day.

Kurtz Bros., Inc is accepting donations of any size, and we would like to focus on what are known as the "Super Six" in foods including:

Other Canned Soups
Canned Vegetables
Cereal
Peanut Butter
Tuna Fish

I had previously written about the Kurtz Bros., Inc involvement with the Water Pollution Control Division in Akron, Ohio. Now, there is a new partnership growing in an attempt to reduce the amount of bio-waste that is accumulated each year.

Meet quasar energy group

quasar energy group, formally, Schmack BioEnergy, is now working with the city of Akron and the Water Pollution Control Division to improve the efficiency of the bio-sludge reuse. Currently, the Akron facility uses about 10% of the recycled bio-sludge to generate electricity for their facility. This saves about$171,000 per year!

"To produce affordable renewable energy from commercial and municipal organic biomass, while improving the environment." -- quasar Mission Statement

Quasar energy group also has plan to build two additional biogas plants including one in Columbus, OH that could potentially be run by Kurtz Bros., Inc.

About the Composting Process

The composting process includes removing the water from the biosolid and compressing it. It is then mixed with either yard waste or sawdust and a binding agent. And finally, the mixture undergoes the last step, a 30-day composting process at the indoor facility.

This week, we are highlighting what Kurtz Bros Inc does within the office to "make the good Earth better".

In the office, we like to promote reusable products. You will not longer find Styrofoam cups in Kurtz Bros Inc offices. We are also promoting the use of flatware or dinnerware versus disposable plastics and paper products. Kurtz Bros Inc also recycles food waste from within the office via the use of vermicomposting.

Reasons why we don’t want to use Styrofoam:

They sit in the landfill for more than a MILLION YEARS.

A 1986 EPA report on solid waste named the polystyrene manufacturing process as the 5th largest creator of hazardous waste.

The National Bureau of Standards Center for Fire Research identified 57 chemical byproducts released during the combustion of polystyrene foam.

The process of making polystyrene pollutes the air and creates large amounts of liquid and solid waste.

Toxic chemicals leach out of these products into the food that they contain (especially when heated in a microwave).

These chemicals threaten human health and reproductive systems.These products are made with petroleum, a non-sustainable and heavily polluting resource.

As promised, I want to share with you some of my favorite eco tips that can be used at home, or in your office space. It is important that we spend time not only promoting business methods of reducing air pollution and recycling, but that we also consider small scale ways that member of the business and community can help.

My Top #5 Tips

Mesh produce bags, such as those you get from oranges or onions, can be reused as a no scratch scrubber for your pots and pans. -- Good Housekeeping October 2009

Find ways to reuse baby food jars, both glass and plastic. Use them to pack salad separates for lunch including salad dressing and veggies. Use them in your craft room for buttons or ribbon. Use them in the bathroom to store hair ties and clips.

Replace traditional bottled water with washable resuable containers. At home, use a glass!

I encourage you all to purchase a travel mug rather than using the cups at Starbucks. However, if you love your Starbucks cup, consider a reusable coffee cozy. -- Twitter @krrley

Replace your napkins and paper towels with reusable options. It not only reduces waste, but saves money as well!

The All American Quarter Horse Congress

October is a big month for the Quarter Horse Congress, and Kurtz Bros Inc is glad to be a part of the excitement! We are the official footing supplier for the event, which runs from October 2nd through the 25th.

Kurtz Bros Inc has supplied all of the footing material used in the arena. The Congress is working closely with our materials to assist in making the material the very best that it can. They are constantly testing the moisture content and breakdown rate of the materials.

Current Events at the Congress:

Cutting is a western style event in which both the rider and horse are judged on their ability to separate a cow from the herd.

Reining is another western style event in which the horse and rider are judged on a pattern of movements including circles, spins, and stops.

Kurtz Bros., Inc was given the opportunity to attend the "Fill the House" event at Progressive Field to support the Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland. The Home for Hope drawing was this past Friday and I hope to have the details up for you on Wednesday as to who won many of the great prizes.

Kurtz Bros., Inc was so happy to be part of this enormous project and we look forward to continued work with the Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland.

The Cleveland Indians brought in $29,720 for the RMH!!

The Red Wigglers Have Moved In

At Kurtz Bros., Inc, we like to "practice what we preach". We are constantly striving to become more green in our offices and store locations through recycling, using reusable kitchenware, and even vermicomposting!

Today, a colony of red wigglers are settling into their new home at the Kurtz Bros., Inc corporate office in Independence. We will be practicing vermicomposting on a small scale basis to reduce waste organic waste products around the office.

What is vermicomposting?

Vermicomposting is a method of recycling food waste naturally through the use of worms. Yummy!

When considering vermicomposting in your home or office, there are a few steps to consider.

1) Containers made of recycled plastic work best, but require more drainage than wood options. Hemlock is a good wood choice. Avoid styrofoam, metal, and certain woods such as cedar, and redwood.

2) Your coposting bin will need to allow for the flow of air.

3) The ideal temperature for the red wigglers is between 59-77 degrees Farnheit, so most indoor locations are ideal. If you must place you bin outside, avoid direct sunlight, or excessive shade.

These red wigglers will eat a variety of organic matter from paper, manure, fruits, and even coffee grounds. Like people, they have preferences....

What are the benefits of vermicomposting?

Vermicomposting reduces organic waste material. The soil produced becomes nutrient rich and the water holding capacity is greatly improves.

This enriched soils makes a great organic fertilizer for plants, often improving root systems and crop yield.

Some Quick Do's & Don'ts

Remember, worms have no teeth! Food should cut up small enough for the worms to consume. Worms will eat nearly anything, but there are things to avoid.

No bones, meat, dairy, oils, excessively salty food, grass clippings.. the worms cannot consume them.

REMEMBER: Composting is the way to cleanly convert kitchen and garden waste into one of nature’s best mulches and soil amendments.

Sustainable Cleveland 2019 Summit

Sustainable Cleveland 2019 was a 3-day event hosted by Mayor Frank Jackson at the Cleveland Convention Center. With nearly 600 participants each day, the goals of the summit were simple; Brainstorm ways to make Cleveland a more sustainable city. We need to reuse, clean-up, and create jobs that will allow our city to recover from its own economic crisis and move forward as a power city.

"Sustainability is about the triple bottom line," he said in a recent interview. "It's good for employees and customers. It's good for the environment. And it's about making money." -- Mayor Frank Jackson

This was no ordinary convention, but rather an "Appreciative Inquiry". This was a systematic process created by Dr. David Cooperrider that encourages individuals to define, discover, dream, design and deliver. The goal of th AI system is to focus groups allowing then to create new plans to pursue the "what could be".

The summit hosted many guest speakers including;

Van Jones (Special Advisor for Green Jobs at the White House Council on Environmental
Quality)
Marc Lautenbach (North American General Manager IBM Corp)
Ray Anderson (Founder/Chairman of Interface Inc)

Holden Shannon ( Senior Vice President Global Real Estate & Security Continental Airlines)

The summit also included hands on opportunities where attendees were divided into groups and asked to define goals and create a plan that would move Cleveland towards zero waste in the next ten years.
